Overview
This document describes the desktop computing hardware, software, and operating systems supported by Health IT.
Purpose
To inform HIT customers and affiliates of current desktop computing standards to assist them with purchasing decisions as well as advising them of compatibility and configuration specifications.
Scope
The devices encompassed by these standards include PCs, laptops, tablets, handheld devices, and printers.

Hardware Standards
Desktop PCs

- Medical Center funded PCs are currently on a 5 year/clinical PC and 6 year/non-clinical PC lifecycle replacement cycle.
Hardware Requirements for use with HIT Desktop Image:
ChipSet: Haswell / Broadwell / Skylake/ KabyLake
RAM: Minimum 4GB / Recommended 8GB
Hard Drive: 128 GB SSD Minimum / Recommeneded 256GB SSD

Minimum Specifications for Reuse of existing PCs:
Note: this pertains to redeployment of PC to another location or for another purpose, such as for home use
Minimum memory: 4GB
Minimum disk: 120GB
Laptops
Models supported: Lenovo Thinkpad, HP EliteBook, and Dell Latitude lines
Current standard models:

Lenovo ThinkPad T series - balance of performance and mobility
Lenovo ThinkPad X series or HP 1020- ultra portable and convertible
Dell Latitude 7490 series ultra portable
Current Specifications:
Network Protocol: The preferred NIC protocol for HSTS secured wireless is 802.11ac. 802.11a and 802.11n dual band are also supported. For best connectivity the 5Gzh range should be used. 802.11b/g are supported for connection to the HSTS Guest network (GUEST).

Tablets/Convertibles

Models supported: Lenovo X series tablet, Lenovo Yoga, HP ElitePad, Microsoft Surface Pro
Current Specifications:
Minimum memory: 8GB
Minimum disk: 256GB SSD
Requests for connectivity to the HSTS secured wireless network in available locations are reviewed for technical and financial feasibility on a case-by-case basis. The HSTS wireless network is not funded or planned for locations other than specific patient care delivery areas.
Handheld Devices (including non-Windows tablets)

Printers
Manufacturers/model lines supported:

for network printing: HP Laserjet line -
for multifunction printing (copier, printer, fax, scanner): Ricoh Afficio line, Canon ImageRunner line, HP Laserjet line
For network and multifunction printers, due to variations within model lines certain models are not suitable for inclusion in the HSTS network. Please see our Network Printer Configuration Standards site for more details and requirements for adding these devices to the HSTS network.

Operating Systems

Windows 10 64 bit is the current standard for both desktop and laptop/tablet computers

Windows 8.1 is supported for Windows-based tablets only

Windows 7 64 bit is supported, 32 bit is supported where needed to run 32 bit applications. Microsoft ends support of Windows 7 in January 2020, so we are actively upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10. After this date, any machine running Windows 7 will require an approved SCSN Exception in order to be connected to the secure Health System network.

Windows XP is not supported. Microsoft ended support of Windows XP on April 8, 2014.

Windows 2000 and Vista are not supported
Software Standards
The following applications are installed on the HSTS standard desktop image:

Home Device Support
The following support services are offered for devices used by UVa Health System staff at home or at other off-campus sites
UVa-Owned Standard Hardware Devices:
- imaging and configuration
- Full troubleshooting and assistance via phone for all aspects of hardware, operating system, and supported software
- Internet connectivity and wi-fi issues are the responsiblity of the employee and are not supported by HIT.
- Hardware repair and software issues that can't be resolved remotely will require that the employee bring the machine on-site to the Health System. HIT technicans are not permitted to visit employee's homes or other off-site locations.
Personally owned Devices:
- Troubleshooting and assistance via phone for software necessary to establish a VPN connection to the Health System network. This includes:
- VPN
- Duo
- Microsoft Defender Anti-virus
- Dell DDPE Encryption
- Citrix client for Epic access
- Internet connectivity and wi-fi issues are the responsiblity of the employee and are not supported by HIT.
- Due to liability reasons HIT technicans cannot address issues with hardware, operating systems, or other software that may be hindering access to the Health System network or systems.
- HIT technicans are not permitted to visit employee's homes or other off-site locations.
